If you’re travelling to Newcastle soon and don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s our own little guide to some of the most notable sights and experiences in the city.

Explore Nobbys Lighthouse

With its beautiful white walls and long history, and standing at 9.8m tall – Nobby’s Lighthouse is definitely worth a visit.

Newcastle is known for its beautiful beaches. Nobbys Lighthouse is an iconic landmark that still guides ships in and out of Newcastle Port. It was built in 1857 and it proudly sits on a large cliff that was once an island.

The island held great significance to the Aboriginal people Mulubinba. It was originally much larger but was reduced in size to accommodate early sailors—their ship’s sails would lose all wind when they crossed behind the large island.

Nobbys Lighthouse stands tall at 9.8m—27.5m including the island—and acts as a point of reference. Even though you do get to spot it quite often just by walking around the city, Nobbys Lighthouse, with its beautiful white walls and long history, is definitely worth a visit.

Sun: 10am – 4pm

At the weekly Farmers Market, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the maker or farmer in person and learn all about the product firsthand.

The market also features products from boutique wineries as well as a couple of gourmet food stands (e.g. Bills Organic Bakery, Hunter Valley Pasta Co.). If you’re a fan of raw and organic food, you definitely need to visit the Newcastle City Farmers Market.

Celebrate History on the Newcastle Memorial Walk

On windy days, many claim that the spirit of the Anzacs can be heard whistling on the walkway.

Celebrate the Anzacs and take in majestic coastal views by taking on the Newcastle Memorial Walk. Along the path, you will come across steel silhouettes of Anzac soldiers engraved with thousands of family names. It’s an emotional moment for many when they realise that their family name is also on the list.

The walkway also features panels with information about the different conflicts and the areas where the battles took place. Of course, the walk is not just about history. From the walkway, you can enjoy stunning 360° views of the coast and city. On windy days, many claim that the spirit of the Anzacs can be heard whistling on the walkway.

Built with 64 tonnes of stainless steel, the 450-metre cliff top walkway cost $4.5m to construct.

24 hours, 7 days a week. The path is lit at night.
